Free Speech Taken too Far

On Monday, a man known as “Preacher Micah” spoke for an hour on the “free speech zone” on Georgia Southern University’s campus. He spoke out against the gay community and the overrall bad habits of college students. He attracted a large crowd with his yelling and “thumping” of the Bible. A student was arrested for getting too close to “Preacher Micah” and not obeying the police officer that was called in to control the angry crowd.

I think that there should be limitations to what is said on campus. Even though this man spoke in a “free speech zone,” he upset many students. I think that people need to be open to others’ beliefs and cultures. There is a more mature way to handle his opinions. Critizing others is not the way to spread a message.

GSU Homecoming

This week has been Homecoming week for Georgia Southern University. Each night the university has hosted an event for students to attend in order to get pumped for the football game on Saturday. Monday night was GSU Idol, Tuesday was the Freak Show, Wednesday was Doo-Dah, Thursday was the Pep rally, and today, Friday, is the parade.

This weekend is the kick-off for the men and womens’ basketball games, and the football team is playing Furman University. I think that Homecoming is a great time for school spirit and unity. The school is busting with pride!

Internships

Georgia Southern is hosting a presentation regarding internships offered through Disney. Students working through the internship will be participating as eith performers, working at the attractions, or through customer service. This internship will help students learn professional skills. It will benefit students through organization and social skills. The internships through Disney are paid.

The Public Relations Major suggests that students complete at least one internship throughout their college career. This is a great way to make sure that this is the right field for the student. Although not all internships pay the bills, the skills taught will help build a resume. I think that all majors should strongly encourage internships. They could be the door to many connections and job opportunities.

Georgia Southern Mobile

Georgia Southern University’s newspaper, The George-Anne published an article about Georgia Southern producing a web site that will be accessed through cell phones. Students will be able to receive information and current events, along with checking their Wings account. The university will also use this source to reach prospective students.

Techonology is becoming more advanced each day. I think that this mobile connection will be a great way to keep students informed and up-to-date with school information. Cell phones are such a large portion of today’s social network, it makes perfect sense to reach students through them. The majority of the students also carry their cell phone with them at all time, so this site will make it easy for them to obtain information.

Trick-Or-Treat on Greek Street

The sororities and fraternities at Georgia Southern University will be hosting a trick-or-treat night for the community of Statesboro on Wednesday, October 28th. Each house on Greek Row will have different games, treats, and prizes. The kids in the Statesboro area will travel from house to house, like they would in any other neighborhood. As well as the items listed above, the Alpha Delta Pi House will have a moon walk and face painting.

This is a time for the greek organizations to give back to the community. Hosting this event has become something that the families of Statesboro look forward to because it is a time to bond with other families as well as meet the members of the greek organizations. More events like this one should take place. A community is a better place to live, if everyone is interacting. Georgia Southern University is a large part of Statesboro, but it is the people that live year-round that keep the school on its feet. Without the support of the community, this university could not thrive.

G.S.U. is named one of the top safest schools in the United States

This week Georgia Southern University was named one of the top 25 safest schools in the United States. Although it may seem as if we have a lot of crime, we have a low rate compared to the rest of the colleges and universities.

Last semester, my apartment was broken into over Thanksgiving break. A tv and a lap top were stolen. Although the police never caught the theif, they worked extremely hard to find them. The police were constantly calling us with updates.

Robbing someone of their belongings is a terrible thing, but I am happy to know that our school is still overall safe compared to the rest of the country. In all reality, we do not have much crime. There are always campus police and Statesboro police seem throughout the town and campus.

Because our school was voted in the top 25 safest schools, I feel like the staff and the students will work hard to keep it that way. It is a good feeling to know that you can walk home from the library late at night and not have to worry.

Georgia Southern Running Club

In today’s times, it is becoming more difficult to balance different aspects of life. Students not only need to focus on school work, social life, jobs, but also their health. It is easy to skip a work out in order to hang out with friends. Georgia Southern offers a running club for any student that likes to run. The university’s school paper, The George-Anne published an article on the club. The group announced that they will be competing at James Madison University in Virginia.

This club not only trains for races, but also to keep the members in shape. Working out strengthens the body, along with helping to relieve stress. Students are under a lot of pressure, so keeping a weekly workout schedule helps. Running is a great way to do all of the things previously listed. It is great that the school has clubs that keep students fit and active.

First Year Experience

September 29, 2009 Georgia Southern University’s newspaper, The George-Anne, produced an article about how first year students are learning about drug and alcohol abuse. The school makes it a requirement for first year students to take a “First Year Experience” course. Each course focuses on different topics. One class provided its students with a motivational speaker on his own experiences with alcohol and drugs while in college.

First Year Experience classes help first year college students adjust to living on their own. These presentations help students realize the issues that surround them. It also gives them ways to achieve their goals without letting peer pressure get in the way. Making students aware will help them overcome the potential issues.

Eagle Entertainment hosts a trip

Georgia Southern’s Eagle Entertainment is hosting a trip to New York City over Christmas break. Students sign up and pay an activity fee, which covers transportation and hotel costs. The students will travel via bus and will stay in New York City for five days. There will be tours that students can sign up for in order to visit monuments such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.

I think that this is a great opportunity for students to branch out and not only visit other places, but also to meet students that they not have interacted with before. Eagle Entertainment uses the activity fees as a way to help students have fun. I think this a great idea because many students would not have the opportunity to travel if it was not for this event.

Events like this should be published more often. I think it is awesome that students care enough to plan a trip that will benefit other student’s enjoyments.

The Economy and Dating

Georgia Southern University’s school news paper, “The George-Ann” had an article about how the economy is hurting the field of dating. The author of the article, Joey Newton explained that he only had $23 in his bank account, but he wanted to take his “lady-friend” on a date. He took his date on a “progressive dinner.” They spent a total of $10 between five fast-food restaurants by ordering and splitting items off the value menus.

I think this is a cute idea if you have been dating for an extended period, but more importantly I think that this article proves that the economy is effecting every part of our lives. It is more difficult now for people to go on dates because it costs so much. College students are low on funds as it is, so the economy issue does not make things any easier.

I like that the school’s newspaper is writing articles on ways to help students with money issues, even if it is just on how to take someone on a date. Every little bit helps!
